In a bid to empower women and reduce gender-based violence, the Teresian Sisters conducted a skill development training for 30 Catholic women from St. Mary's and St. Steven Churches; Outstations in Dzaleka Refugee Camp under Nanthomba Parish.
The training focused on medicated and dish-wash soap making, providing the women with a means to support themselves and their families.
Speaking during the training, Teresian Sisters’ Project Coordinator Sr. Teresa Mulenga said empowering women with skills is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and vulnerability in communities.
“This initiative not only equips women in practical but also boots their confidence and economic independence,” said Sr Mulenga.
In her remarks, chairperson of the women's group Clodina Mukeshimana appealed for continued mentoring and psycho-social support, highlighting the need for ongoing assistance to ensure the skills are retained and the women's well-being is improved.
Dzaleka Refugee Camp, home to over 43,000 refugees and asylum seekers faces significant resource challenges. The camp's growing population has put a strain on its resources, leaving many residents struggling to meet their basic needs. The skill development training by the Teresian Sisters offers a lifeline for the women, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to improve their economic prospects.
