The workshop "Experiences and proposals in networking on access to justice for migrant women in Mexico", held on 13 and 14 March in Mexico City, left us with many lessons, which we continue to articulate.
For the World Women's Observatory (WWO) of the World Union of Catholic Women's Organisations (WUCWO), networking is of utmost importance. It is thus essential to know the organisations in Mexico that provide care and support to people on the move, in order to learn from their good practices and gain insight into their experience of the issue.
As part of our activities, we therefore visited Sin Fronteras IAP, a pioneering organisation with thirty years' experience of providing assistance to migrants.
Since 1995, Sin Fronteras IAP has been working to promote respect for, and defend, the human rights of migrants, refugees, stateless persons, and asylum seekers in Mexico. Throughout its history, it has established itself as an institution committed to transforming the lives of migrants, promoting social change that guarantees their dignity, inclusion and wellbeing. Sin Fronteras has also served as a model for the establishment of other organisations in Mexico.
They provide humanitarian assistance and integration services. They belong to the Network of Solidarity Allies for Employment ( Red de Aliados Solidarios para el Empleo RASEE), which is a group of individuals and organisations that support the strengthening of employability and entrepreneurship skills of people in situations of human mobility and vulnerability who are beneficiaries of Sin Fronteras IAP, in order to improve their integration into Mexican society.
They also operate a day centre called 'La Ceiba,' which aims to provide community and recreational services focused on personal and community development for migrants and beneficiaries of international protection supported by Sin Fronteras I.A.P. The centre engages with participants individually and/or in groups through accompaniment processes designed to build and strengthen human capacities for their socio-cultural integration, while taking their well-being into account. It also promotes connections among participants to foster the creation of support networks
Finally, one of the organisation's strengths is advocacy, which is a strategic tool that allows it to influence the formulation and modification of public policies, legislation and regulatory frameworks that affect migrants, refugees, asylum seekers and stateless persons. They work constantly to ensure that laws, programmes and practices reflect a human rights approach, respect the dignity of people on the move and ensure their protection.
Sin Fronteras IAP is an example of a committed organisation that has been transforming itself, just as human mobility has been transforming itself at its core. In this space, stories are told, but futures are also written, accompanied by professionals who work with their hearts, contributing all the knowledge they have learned throughout their training.
Those of us who visited this space left feeling strengthened, motivated to do more, and eager to build institutional networks—all in support of migrant women.
